Oh no! A box of iron push pins has just spilled all over the floor as you were getting them out for your teacher in the classroom. If you were to pick each one up individually, it would take a long time. In addition, you'd probably get pricked a few times. Luckily, one of your classmates has just built an electromagnet and offers to help pick them up more quickly. As you start to use the electromagnet, you realize it needs to be stronger. Write a claim telling your friend how you could make the electromagnet stronger. Be sure to include the evidence you see in the picture as well as what you see/hear in the video in your explanation. Secondly, think about the word "electromagnet." Explain why it would be named this instead of simply a magnet. Electromagnet being used to pick up the push pins Read the article below from the Foss Science Stories "Earth Materials" book. Then, watch the video about the different types of rocks.
One type of rock is called "metamorphic" rock. Let's break up the word metamorphic- meta means "big" morph means "change" Therefore, the word "metamorphic" means big change. A metamorphic rock has gone through a big change. Your task: Use what you learned in both the article and the video to explain how metamorphic rock is made. Be sure to support your response with evidence from BOTH the article and the video! |
